Kärntner Straße

Today's shopping street was characterised by the 19th century. After its destruction in the Second World War, only a few of the noble buildings from the Gründerzeit have survived. In 1974, Kärntnerstraße was converted into a pedestrian zone and quickly developed into one of the busiest shopping streets in the city centre. From Stephansplatz straight ahead to the State Opera House, there is a diverse mix of historic buildings, traditional businesses and stylish flagship stores of international companies. The Steffl department stores' with its glass panoramic lift offers a wide range of products as well as a fantastic view of the street. Shops such as Swarovski, Benetton, Boss, the jewellers Haban, Wagner or Wempe, the world city store of Peek & Cloppenburg, are located in the pedestrian zone.

Graben

The Graben in Vienna is an exclusive and vibrant pedestrian zone in the heart of the city centre with the Plague Column. The street, which dates back to Roman times, is bordered by no less famous alleyways, streets and squares, which also stand for typical flair, elegant tradition and gourmet enjoyment: Stephansplatz, Kohlmarkt, Naglergasse, Tuchlauben and Petersplatz. In its palaces and buildings, most of which date back to the 17th or 18th century, the boulevard is home to Vienna's finest traditional shops, which were already known as "purveyors to the court" of the emperor. These include the Augarten porcelain manufactory, the court jeweller Heldwein and the court perfumer Nägele & Strubell. An exclusive branch of H&M is now housed in the premises of the former Braun court jeweller, and the historic and elegant interior has been preserved. For gourmets, we recommend the Julius Meinl branch at the end of the Graben. Between all the shops, there is a place to relax in one of the many cafés and restaurants.

Mariahilfer Straße

Mariahilfer Straße is the largest and one of the most famous shopping streets in Vienna. It connects the inner city with the Westbahnhof railway station and the 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Customers from all over the world are drawn here. Hardly anyone remembers that Mariahilfer Straße was the link used by the Emperor between the Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace - which made it a prestigious address. Today it is more of a crossroads of nations: An extensive shopping spree on Mariahilfer Straße is part of the holiday programme of most tourists to Vienna.

Neubaugasse

The most popular side street of Mariahilfer Straße is home to many small shops instead of large fashion chains. It is not a typical shopping street with large shops, partly due to the comparatively narrow space, but is characterised by many small shops and restaurants. A younger crowd shops in this area than in the city centre. Those who like to browse in smaller shops should make a detour to Neubaugasse in the 7th district.

Gumpendorfer Straße

In the side streets between Mariahilfer Straße and Naschmarkt, there are numerous small shops that can be discovered on a stroll. The area between Museums-Quartier and Gumpendorfer Straße in particular offers shops worth seeing - from fashion and beauty to furniture. The area is not just a shopping mile, but much more of an adventure mile. The almost two-kilometre-long street actually consists of three parts, in which very different focal points have formed.

Margaretenstraße

Anyone looking for fashion beyond the usual brands should make a detour to Margaretenstraße in the 4th district. Away from the main shopping streets, the area around the Naschmarkt is gradually developing into a hot spot for fashion. Vienna's creative scene likes to settle in the 4th district.

Schleifmühlgasse

Schleifmühlgasse is the heart of the Freihaus neighbourhood in the 4th district. In addition to hip shops, this lively street is also home to trendy bars and galleries. If you are near the Naschmarkt, you should definitely make a detour to Schleifmühlgasse. A colourful mix of shops - from fashion and furniture to culinary delights - invite you to shop in Schleifmühlgasse.
