Kitzbühel: The name alone reminds many of the town’s trademark, the chamois deer, for “Kitz” means “fawn” in German. However, this can be misleading, since Kitzbühel was actually named after the Bavarian Chizzo clan – back in the 12th century. The town developed as a market place, and mountain silver mining also brought wealth to many of its citizens. Not much changed until the 19th century, when a new outdoor mountain treasure was “discovered:” alpine skiing. In addition to many other notable guests, the Prince of Wales came to ski from peak to valley, and glamour soon replaced silver as the most popular commodity. The legend grew and eventually made Kitzbühel into a name recognized the world over. The rest is history, as they say.
